Alongside his concert career, Massimo is currently Cello Tutor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – Open Academy, University of Sydney.
He began teaching at the age of 18, after having closely studied with and learned from his father Aurelio Bertucci, a renowned cello pedagogue in Italy. From an early age, Massimo assisted his father in lessons for younger students aged 7 to 15, both privately and at AEMAS (Accademia Europea delle Arti e dello Spettacolo) in Naples, where he was active from 2015 to 2022.
He places particular emphasis on developing a solid technical foundation, guiding students to become aware of how to use their body effectively and to analyse musical passages methodically, so they can approach their practice with clarity and independence. He later held teaching positions at secondary music institutions including the Liceo Musicale Bruno Munari in Acerra (Naples) and the Convitto Nazionale di Sessa Aurunca in Caserta. In these roles, he prepared students for their cello graduation exams through individual instruction and also served as both string section tutor and conductor of the school orchestra.
Since relocating to Australia, Massimo has further expanded his educational activity through collaborations with the Sydney Youth Orchestra and Penrith Conservatorium, contributing to ensemble training and sectional coaching within their educational programs. He has also contributed to outreach initiatives with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, supporting programs aimed at engaging young audiences and communities.
Massimo’s teaching activity has included collaborations with leading Australian and Italian organisations such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – Open Academy (University of Sydney), Sydney Youth Orchestra, and Penrith Conservatorium, alongside work with a range of music schools and educational institutions in Sydney including Corpus Christi College (Maroubra), Holy Cross College (Ryde), Fantasia Music School (Chatswood), and Viva Music Academy (Lidcombe). In Italy, he has held teaching positions at institutions such as the AEMAS Accademia Europea delle Arti e dello Spettacolo (Naples), the Istituto Superiore “Bruno Munari” (Acerra), and the Convitto Nazionale “Agostino Nifo” (Sessa Aurunca), where he was involved in individual tuition, ensemble training, and orchestral coaching.
